Hailing from South Africa, the dynamic performer Moonchild Sanelly describes her sound as future ghetto punk. She is recognized for her candid advocacy of female empowerment alongside sexual positivity, delivering vocals in Xhosa and English across productions that blend house, dance-pop, hip-hop, and dancehall elements. After issuing her first full-length project, Rabulapha!, in 2015, she rose to prominence throughout her native country while connecting with global listeners via guest spots on projects from Beyoncé, Gorillaz, Major Lazer, and additional artists. Her follow-up, the 2022 album Phases, wove in South African dance styles such as gqom and amapiano together with experimental pop. Full Moon, which the artist has characterized as her rawest and most honest effort, appeared in 2025.

Born Sanelisiwe Twisha in Port Elizabeth during 1987, she relocated to Durban in 2005 for fashion studies before establishing the clothing line Moonchild Cultwear. Beginning in 2006, she started performing locally in Durban by fusing poetry with her family’s heritage in hip-hop, jazz, and kwaito. Regular appearances on the weekly Gagasi FM program Poetry with King Siso helped expand her reach. Collaborations with DJ Shimza attracted Red Bull’s interest, leading to festival bookings and recording support. While based in Johannesburg, Moonchild Sanelly issued her debut album Rabulapha! in 2015 and went on to release tracks alongside Jay Cubed, DJ Maphorisa, Missu, and further contributors.

She joined Die Antwoord’s European tour in 2018, then gained substantially wider international visibility through her contribution to Beyoncé’s 2019 soundtrack The Lion King: The Gift. Additional appearances followed on projects by Africa Express and DJ Lag, culminating in the late-year release of her EP Nüdes. Further features arrived on Gorillaz’s Song Machine, Season One and Die Antwoord’s House of Zef in 2020, plus Ghetts’ Conflict of Interest and Major Lazer’s Music Is the Weapon (Reloaded) in 2021. Sanelly also hosted the BET Africa talk show The Madness Method, later distributed as a podcast. She continued dropping singles including “Yebo Teacher” and “Covivi.” Her sophomore album Phases landed in 2022, incorporating several earlier tracks often rooted in gqom and amapiano alongside more pop-oriented material. Afterward she appeared on recordings by Jelani Blackman and Ghetts while issuing “Kokokokoko” with Jidenna and Theology HD.

During 2024 she teamed with Self Esteem on the track “Big Man.” Her third album, Full Moon, came out in early 2025. Sanelly has explained that prior releases showcased separate facets of her personality, whereas Full Moon marks the emergence of her complete self and the full range of her experiences.
