Biography
In the latter part of the 1980s, Cancer emerged as a fierce and straightforward death metal group formed by vocalist John Walker, bassist Ian Buchanan, and drummer Carl Stokes. Their initial release, the unpolished To the Gory End, marked their entry into the scene. The addition of guitarist James Murphy, formerly of Obituary, in 1992 bolstered their ranks and led to the more sophisticated Death Shall Rise. Despite the brevity of Murphy's involvement, his reputation within death metal circles provided sufficient recognition for the band to persist, issuing The Sins of Mankind in 1993 and Black Faith in 1995 alongside guitarist Barry Savage. Following their departure from East West Records after that final album, the group faded from view and is believed to have dissolved.
