Not to be confused with the R&B vocalist Cassie, Catherine Britton performs and records under the name Cassy as a vocalist, DJ, and producer whose sets feature smooth transitions and whose own material centers on vocal-driven minimal techno. She entered the world in England yet spent her childhood in Austria, where soul, jazz, and new wave formed her early soundtrack before dance music drew her in during the first years of the 1990s. Her debut appearances behind the decks took place at the Viennese venue Flex, while her initial studio work as a singer came on Elin’s late-’90s remix of Ganymed’s “Music Takes Me Higher,” soon followed by a vocal turn on Zombie Nation’s “Unload.” A partnership with producer and DJ Dave the Hustler first placed her in the minimal-techno spotlight, after which she contributed tracks alongside Perlon’s Luciano and Mathew Jonson. Relocating to Berlin allowed her to increase her DJ schedule, and subsequent work with Ricardo Villalobos and Steve Bug led her to launch the Cassy imprint; she also issued her lean, frequently eerie productions on Perlon and Uzuri. The 2006 mix collection Panorama Bar 01 appeared on Ostgut Ton, with Simply Devotion following on Cocoon in 2009. A brief stay in Paris preceded her move to Amsterdam, where residencies at Trouw, Cocoon Ibiza, and Circo Loco became regular fixtures, and further mix releases included the 2012 Cocoon Heroes set (shared with Joris Voorn) and Fabric 71 in 2013. Her first full-length album of original material, Donna, came out on Aus Music in 2016; assembled across several years, the majority of its tracks—including a version of Prince’s “Strange Relationship”—were co-produced by King Britt.
