Born on 25 September 1969 in Swansea, West Glamorgan, Wales, Catherine Zeta Jones entered the music industry in 1995. Early interviews featured the familiar declaration that she had always loved singing, while her visual presentation—complete with para boots and fishnets—appeared rooted in an already faded grunge aesthetic. Best known at the time for her television work, most notably in The Darling Buds of May, the established screen performer faced critical dismissal upon releasing her first recordings. Her publicity representatives countered by emphasizing prior appearances in West End productions and likening the strength of her vocals to Cher. The March 1995 debut single “In The Arms of Love,” issued on Jeff Wayne’s Wow! Records, offered scant evidence of individuality. She quickly set music aside, securing her first major cinematic part as Elena alongside Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro. Subsequent lead roles followed in Entrapment, The Haunting, and Traffic. Her November 2000 marriage to actor Michael Douglas propelled her to international prominence, after which she earned strong notices for portraying Velma Kelly in Rob Marshall’s screen version of Chicago.
