Anna Kendrick built her reputation through both comedic and dramatic screen roles while simultaneously establishing herself as a performer in stage and screen musicals. After beginning her career as a child actor, she made her Broadway debut in the 1998 production of High Society, where she received a Theater World Award along with nominations for the Drama Desk Award and the Tony Award. Her first film appearance came in 2003 with Todd Graff’s musical comedy Camp, in which she portrayed Fritzi Wagner and earned the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance. Although she contributed a brief vocal moment to the 2009 film Up in the Air, her singing remained largely in the background until the 2012 hit Pitch Perfect showcased her as part of a college a cappella group. One sequence from that movie, the song “Cups,” reinterpreted a track originally recorded by Lulu & the Lampshades and drew inspiration from a viral a cappella video on YouTube; the rendition reached the Hot 100 in early 2013. Additional musical projects followed, including the 2014 screen version of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods and the 2015 adaptation The Last Five Years, which transferred its off-Broadway success to cinemas. Kendrick also reprised her role in Pitch Perfect 2 that same year. In 2016 she supplied the voice of Poppy for the animated feature Trolls, and late in 2017 she appeared in Pitch Perfect 3, concluding the series.
