Biography
Cha Cha Cohen took shape with vocalist Jacqui Dulany, bassist Keith Gregory formerly of Wedding Present, guitarist Tanya Mellott, drummer Simon Smith who had likewise served in Wedding Present, and keyboardist/guitarist Alan Thomas. The ensemble stood among the earliest acts to sign with Scotland’s Chemikal Underground imprint. In its initial phase the band stayed largely inactive because Dulany maintained a residence in Texas while most of the others operated from Leeds, which stretched the interval to three years before the first three singles appeared. A short tour in 1998 gave way to further shows late that year behind the self-titled debut LP issued in early 1999. The record’s funky eclecticism drew favorable notice from multiple outlets. After an extended break during which Dulany relocated to Leeds and the band acquired Mellott, the group resurfaced in late 2001 with the second album All Artists Are Criminals.
