Dancehall selector and singjay Charly Black, who also records as Charly Blacks, first gained notice through singing competitions at the age of five. He later contributed to the Warlord International sound system in Montego Bay and the Bass Odyssey sound system in St. Ann. Under the name Tony Mentol he released his first recording, the 2004 single "Woman It's You." After adopting the Charly Black alias he supplied numerous tracks to Coppershot, M Bass, and VP, the last of which put out "Buddy Buddy." The 2014 song "Gyal You a Party Animal," constructed on Kurt Riley's Jambe-An riddim, steadily reached listeners beyond Jamaica and found particular favor throughout South America. Casablanca secured the U.S. rights to the track in early 2016. Black opened 2017 with the collaborative Sexy Ting Riddim EP that included Ishwana and Shaq Royal. Additional singles arrived in steady succession over the ensuing months, among them "Hoist & Wine," "Independent," "Associate," and "Never Grudge."
