Emerging from Jamaica's reggae and dancehall scene, I-Octane built his reputation through a distinctive strain of conscious reggae. He first appeared in 2005 and proceeded to issue numerous singles along with full-length projects such as Crying to the Nation in 2012, Love & Life in 2018, and I Am Great in 2022, all the while blending roots reggae, dancehall, lovers rock, and hip-hop.
Raised in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, Byiome Muir, who performs as I-Octane, completed his education at area schools and colleges before committing to music as a full-time pursuit at age 16. He entered a recording agreement with Penthouse Records, the label associated with Buju Banton, in 2000 under the name Richie Rich. After releasing several dancehall numbers, he adopted the name I-Octane in 2005 and placed singles with Rated R, Purple Skunk, and Arrows Records; among them, "Stab Vampire" and "Mama Alone" reached the top of the Jamaican charts. His lyrics, shaped by personal experience and Rastafarian principles, combined with an approachable fusion of dancehall, roots, and lovers rock. In 2011 he founded Conquer the Globe Productions, which released his first album, Crying to the Nation, the following year; its reception prompted tours through the United States, Europe, and Canada.
Two years afterward, his second album My Journey appeared, and further singles preceded Love & Life in 2018. I-Octane served as executive producer and enlisted Shaggy, Romain Virgo, and Demarco for the project. He maintained a steady output of singles before issuing his fourth album, Moods, in 2021, then delivered his fifth LP, I Am Great, early in 2022.
