Biography
The quartet Chat Pile derives its moniker from the mining remnants scattered throughout Oklahoma, where the group formed. Employing a sludge-laden approach to noise rock, the four-piece confronts themes of societal collapse. The musicians first converged in Oklahoma City, bringing together Ponca City native Raygun Busch on vocals, Moore's Luther Manhole on guitar, and the Asher-based brothers Cap'n Ron on drums with Stin on bass.
Their 2019 debut EP This Dungeon Earth generated underground attention on music rating platforms, prompting a follow-up release, Remove Your Skin Please, within months. After signing with The Flenser in 2020, the outfit delivered a Sepultura cover of "Roots Bloody Roots" and the 2021 split EP Portrayal of Guilt/Chat Pile Split alongside Portrayal of Guilt. The independently recorded full-length God's Country arrived in 2022, its lyrics confronting real-world atrocities and social inequities; the album drew widespread online praise, among them from Touché Amoré's Jeremy Bolm, who selected it as his top release of the year.
Following their score for the film Tenkiller, which featured Busch in the lead role, Chat Pile collaborated on the split EP Brothers in Christ with Kansas City's Nerver and completed an initial European tour. Their 2024 sophomore album Cool World incorporated greater sludge metal elements into a brooding collection that continued to channel the band's unease with contemporary conditions through a cathartic yet uneasy lens.
