Biography
Chelsea Jade, originating from New Zealand, first surfaced in 2014 with intimate, atmospheric electro-pop issued under her own first and middle names after prior involvement in the indie electronic project Watercolours. She later shifted base to Los Angeles, where she took on songwriting assignments for acts such as Wet and the Chainsmokers while still releasing her own recordings. The collaborative full-length solo debut Personal Best appeared in 2018, followed in 2022 by the self-produced Soft Spot.
Born in Capetown, South Africa and relocated to Auckland at age five, Chelsea Jade Metcalf performed as a teenager in an indie folk trio alongside classmates Talita Setyady and Elizabeth Stokes (the Beths). She initially presented gentle, otherworldly yet danceable indie electronica under the Watercolours pseudonym beginning in 2011. The Over and Under EP, released in late 2012, assembled remixes of four tracks by contributors including Jeremy Toy and James Duncan. She next delivered the Watercolours EP Portals in January 2014, then issued Beacons, her opening EP as Chelsea Jade, later that year.
Metcalf moved to Los Angeles in 2015 to develop both her solo path and her role as a songwriter-for-hire. After supplying material to Wet, Cxloe, and So Below, she co-wrote the Chainsmokers 2018 single “You Owe Me.” That same year she self-released her debut album Personal Best, which contained several joint tracks featuring Brad Hale (Now, Now) and Sam McCarthy (BoyBoy).
After settling in Brooklyn and gathering credits as a video editor, animator, dancer—including an appearance in Lorde’s “Mood Ring” video—and studio backing vocalist for Deafheaven and the Naked and Famous, she returned in 2022 with Soft Spot, produced entirely by herself.
