Formed in Honolulu during the early 1990s, the eclectic underground rock outfit Chokebore features guitarist John Kroll, drummer Christian Omar Madrigal Izzo, vocalist Troy Bruno Von Balthazar and bassist A Frank G. The band shifted operations to Los Angeles in 1992, aiming for stronger live opportunities and wider attention. A 1993 agreement with Amphetamine Reptile led to the release of the debut single Nobody/Throats and the first full-length Motionless before the year ended. Chokebore performed alongside fellow Amphetamine Reptile acts Guzzard and Today Is The Day plus similarly inclined groups such as the Butthole Surfers, Girls Against Boys and Nirvana, building a loyal European audience through records including 1995's Anything Near Water. Both the following year's A Taste For Bitters and 1999's Black Black were tracked and mixed in France, the latter serving as Chokebore's debut release on the Punk In My Vitamins label.
