Christian Lee Hutson, a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter, brings a keen talent for close, finely observed introspection to his work. Light Americana, sharp indie pop, and lo-fi folk narratives run through his songs, whose gentle tone is offset by the clarity and quiet insistence of the lyrics. Though he began releasing solo material in the early 2010s, wider recognition arrived later in the decade through his work as a writer and collaborator with Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers; the latter co-produced his Anti- debut, Beginners, in 2020. Bridgers remained a central partner on the next two records, co-producing both Quitters in 2022 and Paradise Pop. 10 in 2024, the latter following his move from the West Coast to New York.

Hutson grew up in Santa Monica and started playing guitar at age twelve, drawn to Elliott Smith’s experimental home-recorded indie folk. With fellow songwriter Pearl Charles he formed the Americana duo the Driftwood Singers, which issued an independent album in 2012. His solo career opened the following year with The Hell with It and continued in 2014 with Yeah Okay, I Know. Over the next several years he toured intermittently, released a pair of EPs, and steadily refined his songwriting.

After meeting Phoebe Bridgers in 2018, Hutson co-wrote several songs for the debut album by Boygenius, the supergroup Bridgers formed with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. He also contributed to the 2019 Bridgers/Oberst project Better Oblivion Community Center. Bridgers reciprocated the following year by co-producing Beginners, Hutson’s first release on Anti-, which paired his warm, intelligent folk style with understated string and orchestral parts. Later in 2020 he added songwriting and instrumental work to Bridgers’ album Punisher and appeared on Hand Habits’ Fun House, Ada Lea’s One Hand on the Steering Wheel the Other Sewing a Garden, and SASAMI’s Squeeze. Quitters, his second Anti- album, arrived in 2022 with Bridgers and Oberst producing; the decision to record to analog tape lent additional warmth to the understated arrangements. After touring as Bridgers’ support act, the two friends reconvened in Brooklyn—Hutson’s new home—to begin work on his next record. The relocation prompted a fresh perspective on California, resulting in a tender yet off-kilter mood across the sessions. Titled after a small Indiana town he once visited with his father, Paradise Pop. 10 was released in 2024, again co-produced by Bridgers and featuring contributions from Maya Hawke, Katy Kirby, and Shahzad Ismaily.
