Biography
Italian prog outfit Circus 2000 fused the raw, untamed energy of late-1960s West Coast psychedelia with the tighter architecture of progressive rock, setting itself apart through frontwoman Silvana Aliotta’s commanding vocal presence and commanding artistic direction. Across a short lifespan the group issued just two LPs, yet these recordings later became objects of fascination for successive waves of prog listeners and prompted retrospective collections, among them the 2023 anthology I Am the Witch: The Anthology.
The band coalesced in the northern Italian city of Turin at the dawn of the 1970s. Aliotta guided the lineup that also featured guitarist Marcello Quartarone, drummer Roberto Betti and bassist Gianni Bianco. Most material was delivered in English, although a handful of singles appeared in Italian. The self-titled debut from 1970 blended Bay Area psychedelic rock with exploratory textures and occasional progressive flourishes. Franco Loprevite stepped in for Betti ahead of the 1972 follow-up An Escape from a Box, a more overtly progressive statement that marked the quartet’s last studio album. Additional singles and contributions to film soundtracks followed before the members parted ways soon after that release. Later prog aficionados were drawn to the group’s American-inflected approach, turning its scarce pressings into collector’s items. Akarma issued the 10-inch vinyl compilation Boxing Circus, devoted to rare and unreleased material, in 1999, while Grapefruit presented the comprehensive studio overview I Am the Witch: The Anthology in 2023.
