Having earned acclaim as a composer, his works reached recordings by artists including César Camargo Mariano, Nana Caymmi, and Roupa Nova. Relocation to Rio de Janeiro during his teenage years placed him in the ensemble Semente. Formation of Boca Livre occurred in 1978 alongside Maurício Maestro, Zé Renato, and David Tygel, creating one of Brazil’s most successful instrumental/vocal groups. The tracks “Toada,” written with Zé Renato and Juca Filho, and “Quem Tem a Viola,” created with Zé Renato and Xico Chaves, served as major successes that elevated the album to the position of top-selling independent release. Following his departure from Boca Livre, focus on solo work produced the 1980 single “Quero Quero” and six additional solo LPs and CDs issued through 2000. The 1985 CBS LP Pelo Sim, Pelo Não appeared in partnership with Zé Renato, placing two songs, the title track among them, on the soundtrack to the TV Globo soap opera Roque Santeiro. Banda Zil issued the album Zil in 1987 before performing at the 1988 Free Jazz Festival.
