Emerging during the 1980s as a privileged interpreter, Vânia Bastos had begun singing as an amateur while still a teenager, participating in church choirs. Her relocation to São Paulo in 1975 for sociology studies took an unexpected turn when Arrigo Barnabé's hit show and album Clara Crocodilo (1980) prompted a career shift. The 1983 release Tubarões Voadores by Barnabé further established her remarkable vocal potential. In addition to contributing as a backing vocalist on various recordings and live shows, she lent her voice to other figures within the vanguarda paulista, including Itamar Assumpção. The year 1986 marked the arrival of her debut solo effort, titled Vânia Bastos. Starting in 1989, her husband—the acclaimed Eduardo Gudin—took on production duties for her subsequent projects, which include Eduardo Gudin e Vânia Bastos (1989), Vânia Bastos (1990), Cantando Caetano (1992), Canta Mais (1994), Vânia Bastos & Cordas - Canções de Tom Jobim (1995), Diversões Não Eletrônicas (1997), and Belas feras (1999).
