Biography
Hailing from London, the psychedelic rock outfit Club Kuru gravitates toward the gentler edges of the style, supported by immaculate studio craft and rich, memorable melodies. The project originated in 2012 when classically trained pianist-turned-producer Laurie Erskine sought an exit from the then-subdued London jazz circuit. Following several independent solo outings, among them the 2015 EP Layla, Erskine chose to expand the lineup. Laurence Hammerton’s 2016 audition initiated a lasting creative alliance, converting the venture into a duo. Club Kuru subsequently established a recording and production base in Manor House, North London; when the premises faced demolition for redevelopment, the pair relocated to shared quarters in South London. After inking a deal with Dog Holiday Records, they issued their debut EP, Waiting in the Corner, in 2017, which paved the way for the full-length Giving In the following year. Though entirely self-produced and self-recorded, the album recruited additional personnel for live dates, among them bassist Fergus Ireland. A sophomore effort, Meet Your Maker, surfaced in 2019.
