Biography
Formed in Chicago, Illinois, Company of Thieves originated when vocalist Genevieve Schatz and guitarist Marc Walloch first connected at Union Station and decided to start the co-ed indie rock band. Drummer Mike Ortiz soon completed the lineup, enabling the trio to develop a singular style that drew on Fiona Apple's articulate songwriting alongside Denali's alternative-rock drive. Their independently issued debut, Ordinary Riches, appeared in May 2007 and expanded the band's local audience in the Windy City, prompting a shift from coffeehouse shows to established performance spaces. National media coverage followed, prompting Wind Up Records to sign the group in 2008 and re-release Ordinary Riches in early 2009. The label then issued the band's second album, Running From a Gamble, in 2011.
