Biography
French-Canadian R&B vocalist Corneille converted the trauma of losing his relatives into mainstream recording success through his opening long-player Parce Qu'on Vient de Loin, issued in 2003, a stark and frequently unsettling sequence of tracks drawn from the slaying of his relatives by a Rwandan execution squad. Corneille Nyungura entered the world in Freiburg, Germany, on March 24, 1977, within a Rwandan household that was finishing an international academic assignment. He nevertheless passed most of his formative years on the African continent, internalizing indigenous musical customs alongside the groundbreaking American soul sounds of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Prince. During adolescence he further explored his parents' archive of vintage chanson discs featuring Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, and additional artists, and this blend of sources shaped a youthful talent who committed his first self-written material to tape at age 16. A slot on Rwanda's nationwide Discovery Awards telecast came soon afterward, yet in April 1994 his emerging path in music was brutally interrupted when a Rwandan military unit invaded his residence, murdering his Tutsi father, his Hutu mother, and his siblings as he watched helplessly from behind the household sofa. Still recovering from the experience, Corneille aligned himself with other Rwandan displaced persons and escaped to Zaire, where he located a German couple previously acquainted with his parents. They sheltered him and transported him to Europe, and he stayed there until relocating to Canada in 1997. After establishing himself in Montreal, he pursued studies in communications while performing on the side in O.N.E., an R&B trio he established with Haitian acquaintances. Following a Quebecois chart success via the single "Zoukin'," the ensemble became regulars on the Montreal stage circuit, supporting main acts such as Isabelle Boulay.
Corneille departed O.N.E. in 2001 to pursue an independent path, drawing notice and praise for a standout set at the 2002 Francofolies festival. That showcase led to a joint appearance with Eurythmics alum Dave Stewart, and the next year he released Parce Qu'on Vient de Loin, a candid autobiographical narrative recounting the deaths of his relatives and his flight from his native land. Both the title track and "Seul au Monde" achieved major commercial impact and secured Corneille nods for Best Newcomer and Best Album at the 2004 Victoires de la Musique ceremony. Following a favorably received trek that encompassed a date at the Nice Jazz Festival, he reentered the studio to record "Dix ans Ensemble," a collaboration with mbalax pioneer Youssou N'Dour intended for a charity album benefiting the AIDS advocacy organization Ensemble Contre le Sida. Before the close of the year, Corneille traveled back to Quebec to accept the esteemed Félix award for Best Male Artist of the Year. During a dedicated event he additionally received formal Canadian citizenship. In 2005 he undertook his initial journey to Africa since the family killings, appearing at the N'Dour-curated Africa Live event staged to assist malaria sufferers. Corneille's eagerly awaited second album, Les Marchands de Rêves, reached retailers that November, offering a more hopeful depiction of African life while expanding on the Afrobeat, reggae, and soul elements that shaped his early years.
During 2007 he made an initial foray into Anglophone territories via the album The Birth of Cornelius. The project performed strongly in France yet registered minimal effect farther afield until Motown acquired it two years later, reissuing it across the United States and other English-language regions, where momentum gradually increased. Concurrently, Corneille reverted to French-language work, delivering two further successful collections, Sans Titre in 2009 and Les Inséparables in 2011, the latter marking his third French Top Ten entry.
