Minneapolis blues-rock quintet Crow came together in 1967 when frontman Dave Wagner joined forces with guitarist Dick Weigand, the guitarist’s bassist brother Larry, and keyboardist Kink Middlemist. Initially known as South 40, the group recruited former Castaways drummer Denny Craswell before entering the studio to cut its 1969 debut album Crow Music on the Amaret label. The single “Evil Woman (Don’t You Play Your Games with Me)” reached the U.S. Top 20 despite an unauthorized horn overdub that clashed with the band’s intentions. Crow by Crow appeared in 1970, yet the follow-up single “Cottage Cheese” drew little notice. After the release of 1971’s Mosaic the ensemble dissolved, though Wagner returned in 1973 with the solo album David Wagner D/B/A Crow.
