Cruachan stands among the pioneering forces that shaped folk metal during its formative years in the early 1990s, merging the melodies, instruments, and mythic narratives of Irish traditional music with the intensity of heavy metal. Under the direction of Keith Fay on vocals and guitar, the group issued its debut recording in 1995 and has since refined its distinctive Celtic-metal approach across such notable releases as Folk-Lore (2002), The Morrigan's Call (2006), and the closing chapter of the “Blood Trilogy,” Nine Years of Blood (2018).

The ensemble arose in 1992 from the remnants of Minas Tirith, taking its name from the Gaelic term for “the big stack,” which also served as the battle slogan of Clan Campbell in the Argyll district. Core members at that time included Fay handling vocals, guitars, and keyboards, alongside Jay Brennan on guitar, John O'Fathaigh on flute, John Clohessy on bass, and Jay O'Niell on drums. Their first album, Tuatha Na Gael, appeared in 1995 on Nazgul's Eyrie Productions and concentrated on fusing Irish heritage, Celtic history, and mythological themes with the aggression of death and black metal. Hammerheart Records soon signed the band, resulting in the 1999 follow-up The Middle Kingdom, which introduced drummer Joe Farrell and vocalist-percussionist Karen Gilligan.

Mainstream recognition arrived with Folk-Lore in 2002. Legendary Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan produced the record and contributed vocals to the single “Ride On,” which achieved success in Ireland. The group then became a regular presence at festivals such as Hellfest, Brutal Assault, and 70000 Tons of Metal, broadening its reach beyond the metal underground. Karmageddon Media issued the less favorably received Pagan in 2004, yet the band rebounded with The Morrigan's Call in 2006 on AFM Records, earning praise both domestically and internationally.

Numerous personnel shifts preceded the 2011 release of Blood on the Black Robe, a black-metal-oriented effort on Candlelight Records that marked Fay’s assumption of lead vocal responsibilities after Gilligan and Farrell exited. The first part of the planned trilogy, it was followed on Trollzorn—the label specializing in pagan and folk acts—by Blood for the Blood God in 2014 and Nine Years of Blood in 2018. In 2020 Cruachan signed with Sweden’s Despotz Records, issuing the single “The Hawthorn” in early 2021.
