Biography
The experimental indie pop crafted by Cryptacize carries an elliptical bent yet reveals itself readily through the presence of ex-Deerhoof guitarist Chris Cohen and the playful vocalist/instrumentalist Nedelle Torrisi. Their earliest work together took shape within Cohen’s Curtains project, where Torrisi contributed vocals to the 2006 album Calamity. Cohen and Torrisi came across percussionist Michael Carreira after watching a YouTube clip of his cowbell performance. Once Carreira joined, the three musicians formed Cryptacize and launched into live performances and recording sessions throughout 2007. The band then joined Asthmatic Kitty and delivered its debut full-length, Dig That Treasure, in early 2008. After a summer tour alongside Mirah, the Blow, Why?, Ponytail, and comparable acts, Cryptacize withdrew to a cabin near Yosemite National Park to track its follow-up, Mythomania, whose expanded instrumentation and tighter song structures set it apart from Dig That Treasure. The album appeared in spring 2009.
