The Seattle pop quartet the Crystal Skulls possess firm indie credentials through their affiliation with the respected Suicide Squeeze Records imprint and the prior involvement of singer Christian Wargo in both the Danielson Famile and Pedro the Lion, yet their core sound draws from an unfashionable strain of 1970s AM pop that spans Steely Dan, Wings, Todd Rundgren, 10cc, and Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street." Wargo assembled the group in 2003 with bassist Yuuki Matthews, guitarist Ryan Phillips, and drummer Casey Foubert, each already established in the Seattle indie community. Matthews and Foubert had comprised two-thirds of Seldom, while Foubert had also served as a part-time member of Pedro the Lion. The name references an obscure supernatural conviction that thirteen ancient crystal skulls had been secreted across the globe by some higher consciousness. Their debut album, Blocked Numbers, surfaced in spring 2005, and the follow-up, Outgoing Behavior, arrived the next spring with a slightly more contemporary cast that drew press comparisons to Jens Lekman and the Concretes.
