Biography
Damhnait Doyle launched her professional music career during the mid-1990s. Following several singles and a debut album issued in 1996, the emerging vocalist earned nominations for Female Artist of the Year, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Best New Solo Artist, and Video of the Year—an auspicious beginning.
Born in Labrador City, Newfoundland, during the winter of 1975 to a mother who taught and a father who served as a professor, Doyle favored music over conventional studies from an early age. At six her family relocated to St. John’s, where she pursued classical voice training, participated in acting, and performed with two local ensembles: her Catholic high school choir and the Holy Heart of Mary Chamber Choir.
After finishing school she intended to enroll at the National Theater School yet was not accepted. Seeking any connection to the music industry, she took an office position at a music distribution company. While singing at her desk one day she was discovered, securing a recording contract with Latitude Records. In 1996 she cut her first two singles, “A List of Things” and “Whatever You Need,” completed the album Shadows Wake Me, and toured with Barenaked Ladies to expand her audience.
Four years passed before she delivered her second full-length release, Hyperdramatic, now signed to EMI Music Canada. The project featured contributions from Tim Welch, Chris Tait, Anne Bourne, and Dave Gray, with tracks including “Tattooed,” “Learn to Crawl,” “Elusive Drug,” “Sleep Past You,” “So Well,” and “Maybe a Son.”
