Biography
David Fung first gained worldwide attention during the 2010s through Australia's classical music circles. The Steinway & Sons roster welcomed him in 2016, and he has since produced several albums for the label.
Born in Hong Kong on August 17, 1983, Fung arrived in Sydney, Australia, with his family at age three. Violin studies began at six, followed by piano lessons two years afterward. Fluent in multiple languages, he distinguished himself at James Ruse Agricultural High School in Sydney and secured the highest university entrance ranking available in the Australian system. He initially entered the medical program at the University of New South Wales, yet transferred to music after two years.
Recognition arrived swiftly: a 2002 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Award brought a performance of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Fung has sustained performances and recordings with major Australian ensembles, though he relocated to the United States in 2003 and became the first piano student at Los Angeles's Colburn Conservatory. He earned that institution's first piano degree in 2007, then completed master's and doctoral work at Yale University under Peter Frankl and Claude Frank. Further training occurred at the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, Germany.
These experiences supported an extensive international schedule that has included appearances with the Israel Philharmonic, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra, where his performances drew positive notices even in that exacting city. A 2016 China tour featured concerts at Beijing Concert Hall, Guangzhou Opera House, and Tianjin Grand Theater, among other locations. That same year placed him on the Steinway & Sons artist list; recordings have also appeared on ABC Classics and Yarlung. The Grand Duo, issued in 2018 with violinist So Jin Kim, presented works by Richard Strauss, Avner Dorman, and Schubert. In 2019 he released a Steinway & Sons album devoted to Mozart piano sonatas.
