Biography
Davíd Garza emerged from Texas as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose output has crossed numerous styles while extending into production, film scoring, and sideman contributions. After establishing himself within Austin’s early-1990s indie-rock community, he had already issued multiple self-released recordings before securing a major-label contract and unveiling This Euphoria in 1998. The record and its 2001 successor Overdub broadened his reach beyond the United States, a following he sustained for the ensuing two decades by operating independently. Alongside his solo output, Garza lent instrumental support to Alejandro Escovedo, John Legend, and Hanson, later extending his role to production and soundtrack work. In 2020 he served as co-producer and cover designer for Fiona Apple’s Grammy-winning Fetch the Bolt Cutters, after which he collaborated with artists as varied as Midland and Ozomatli. The 2024 archival series Lost & Found: 2004-2025 compiled twelve volumes spanning his solo catalog.
Born in Irving, Texas, Davíd Garza—pronounced Dah-VEED—encountered music from childhood onward. As a third-generation Mexican-American, he absorbed influences that included Led Zeppelin, fellow Texan Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the regional Mexican sounds broadcast on local radio. After performing in several high-school groups, he entered the University of Texas-Austin in 1989; there his band Twang Twang Shaka Boom attracted industry notice. He soon proceeded as a solo artist, maintaining a rigorous touring schedule and a firm commitment to self-releasing his recordings. Lava/Atlantic ultimately signed him, placing a track on the Great Expectations soundtrack before issuing his major-label debut This Euphoria in 1998. The album received strong critical response, prompting Atlantic to grant him self-production duties for the 2001 follow-up Overdub. Although the association ended, Garza had already integrated into the Los Angeles scene, spending the balance of the decade issuing material on his Wide Open imprint while taking on session assignments. He appeared on albums by Rhett Miller, Revolting Cocks, and John Legend, and toured with both Fiona Apple and Alejandro Escovedo.
Throughout the 2010s Garza sustained an independent release schedule that encompassed jagged alt-rock, acoustic folk, and lo-fi indie. He simultaneously composed scores for Wretches & Jabberers (2011), Racing Extinction (2015), and the 2019 HBO documentary Running With Beto. His longstanding connection with Fiona Apple continued when he performed on and co-produced her 2020 album Fetch the Bolt Cutters, which received two Grammy Awards. The project opened further production opportunities, leading him to helm recordings for Sparta, Midland, Hanson, and Fastball. Embracing his Mexican roots, he joined his mother, singer Noelia Garza, for the 2022 Latin-folk collection Mi Tesoro. In 2024 Garza produced albums for Suzanna Choffel and Lucy Woodward, supplied music for Stanley Tucci’s WWII podcast Pack One Bag, and initiated the expansive reissue campaign Lost & Found: 2004-2025.
