Biography
Bob Schneider has long held a prominent spot in Austin's music community, having spent considerable time performing with multiple groups prior to launching his own career as a solo artist in 1999. He entered the world in Michigan and spent part of his childhood in Germany before leaving the University of Texas at El Paso to take the lead role in Joe Rockhead, a group blending funk and rap. That ensemble put out three self-released albums and then split apart just as it was poised to ink a deal with a major label. Schneider next joined the Ugly Americans, a loose-knit ensemble with echoes of Phish that gained notice while supporting the Dave Matthews Band on tour. In 1997 he helped establish the Scabs, earning further recognition through his flamboyant stage presence as frontman. By 1999 he had shifted focus to performing alone, initially presenting his work under the moniker Lonelyland.
As an independent artist Schneider drew from the wide-ranging sounds of his earlier groups, merging classic singer-songwriter traditions with funk, country, rock, and folk influences. His rugged appearance and resonant, gravelly delivery helped draw notice, yet it was the songs themselves—evoking 1970s figures ranging from Neil Young to Paul Simon while incorporating a contemporary feel akin to Beck and sharp observations on alienation, substance abuse, and failed relationships—that sustained his visibility throughout Austin. He first reached toward a broader audience with Lonelyland in 2001, his debut release on Universal Records, and continued with I'm Good Now in 2004. After parting ways with Universal that same year he signed with Vanguard, all the while issuing recordings from assorted side endeavors on his Shockorama Records imprint. Vanguard later reissued most of those projects along with the subsequent solo effort The Californian in 2006. Maintaining a brisk output, Schneider delivered When the Sun Breaks Down on the Moon in 2007, Lovely Creatures in 2009, and A Perfect Day in 2011.
