Matt Wertz operates as an independent singer and songwriter whose heartfelt, upbeat style fuses alternative rock with acoustic folk alongside pop and R&B touches from the eighties and nineties. Two self-released albums preceded his Nettwerk contract, secured just prior to the arrival of the blue-eyed soul-inflected Everything In Between in 2007. Later releases such as Heatwave in 2013, Gun Shy in 2016, and Recently in 2023 broadened his palette through contemporary rhythms and layers, lending his established pop instincts a bright electronic luster.

Liberty, Missouri, near Kansas City, is where Wertz was born and grew up; he first began composing material as a college freshman. Early experience came through performances at Young Life gatherings and shows with Jars of Clay, which led to the independent issues of Somedays in 2001 and 23 Places in 2003. The EP Today & Tomorrow surfaced in 2005, and after relocating to Nashville his steady road work prompted a Nettwerk Records deal that yielded Everything in Between in early 2007. Under Summer Sun appeared the following year, mixing fresh songs with selections from the previous album.

Both Weights & Wings and the seasonal Snow Globe arrived in 2011. Affection for eighties pop shaped Heatwave in 2014, while Gun Shy, released in 2016 after a move to Los Angeles, introduced nineties-flavored beats and dense synths. The reflective Recently from 2023 continued his balanced integration of vintage and current pop approaches.
