Biography
Growing up amid a household steeped in music, Tyler Hilton developed an early fascination with guitar, vocals, and live performance. By age seventeen he was composing original material and had become a regular presence at open-mic nights in Palm Springs, California. In 2000 he wrote, recorded, and issued a self-titled debut that he began pitching to industry contacts, yet it was an unplanned phone performance for KLOS Los Angeles hosts Mark and Brian that secured him a slot at the station’s Christmas concert. The resulting airplay drew the attention of Maverick Records, which signed him shortly afterward. While his recording path advanced, Hilton simultaneously explored acting, joining the cast of the WB series One Tree Hill in 2004 as the troubled musician Chris Keller. He also portrayed Elvis Presley opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Johnny Cash in the 2005 biopic Walk the Line. The television exposure proved useful for promoting his Maverick debut, Tracks of Tyler Hilton, which arrived in September 2004. The album merged pop with understated Americana elements and showcased Hilton’s distinctive husky vocals; among its tracks was “Glad,” the number he had performed onscreen as Keller. In early 2005 he launched his first headline tour in support of both the album and the recently issued One Tree Hill soundtrack.
