Biography
OneRepublic emerged as a powerhouse in contemporary music by fusing alternative rock textures with modern pop sensibilities and classic singer-songwriter traditions, becoming one of their era’s biggest commercial successes. Frontman Ryan Tedder, who collected multiple Grammys for his songwriting contributions to major artists such as Leona Lewis, Beyoncé, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, and Adele, propelled the group forward when the Timbaland remix of “Apologize” lifted their 2006 debut album Dreaming Out Loud into the spotlight. Radio dominance followed, cresting with the 2013 release Native and its standout tracks “Counting Stars” and “Love Runs Out.” Even as Tedder steered the sound toward electronic dance and pop accents, the band maintained strong chart presence, reaching number three on the Billboard 200 with 2016’s Oh My My and number eleven with 2021’s Human. In 2022 they notched another Top 40 entry with “I Ain’t Worried” from the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack while issuing early singles ahead of their 2024 album Artificial Paradise.
Tedder and Zach Filkins launched the band in 2002 in Colorado, drawing from the Beatles, Peter Gabriel, and U2, before shifting operations to Los Angeles. Keyboardist Drew Brown, bassist and cellist Brent Kutzle, and drummer Eddie Fisher soon joined the lineup. After signing with Sony BMG’s Columbia imprint in 2003, the musicians returned from a Coachella performance three years later to discover they had been dropped. Their fanbase nevertheless expanded rapidly online, aided by Tedder’s outside cuts for Hilary Duff and Blake Lewis. Hip-hop producer Timbaland, already a longtime collaborator, recognized their growing reach and brought the act to his Mosley Music Group in partnership with Interscope Records. He reworked “Apologize” for his own 2007 project Timbaland Presents Shock Value, turning the track into a multi-country platinum seller that shattered U.K. airplay marks and moved 4.3 million digital copies in the United States.
OneRepublic issued their first full-length, Dreaming Out Loud, later that year, showcasing piano-driven compositions and pop-rock hooks. The set earned gold certification while “Apologize” continued topping charts worldwide. Around the same period Tedder’s song “Bleeding Love” for Leona Lewis mirrored that success, cementing his reputation as a leading songwriter of the year. Work on a sophomore album began in 2008, with the band retreating to Colorado Springs for focus. Though originally slated for summer, Waking Up arrived in September 2009; its lead single “All the Right Moves” reached radio that month, and the album itself followed in November, charting across the U.S. and Europe.
The platinum-certified third studio effort Native appeared in 2013, highlighted by “Feel Again,” “If I Lose Myself,” and the group’s biggest hit to that point, “Counting Stars,” which climbed to number two in the United States. An extensive world tour prompted a deluxe edition containing “Love Runs Out,” which peaked at number fifteen on the Hot 100 and landed inside the Top Ten elsewhere. The band also charted with their 2014 iTunes Session. While continuing to tour, they tracked their next album across sixteen cities in twelve countries, absorbing influences from Turkey, Brazil, Spain, and Russia. Released in late 2016, Oh My My reached number three on the Billboard 200.
During 2017 dates supporting Fitz & the Tantrums and James Arthur, OneRepublic dropped the tropical-tinged standalone single “No Vacancy,” later issued in remixes featuring Sebastian Yatra and Amir. Additional standalone tracks surfaced through 2017 and 2018 before a gradual rollout of material leading to their fifth album. Human arrived in August 2021, incorporating earlier releases such as the platinum-certified “Rescue Me” and the Kygo collaboration “Lose Somebody” on the deluxe edition. The set reached number eleven on the Billboard 200 and included “Somebody to Love,” written by Songland season-one winner JT Roach alongside Tedder’s co-hosts Ester Dean and Shane McAnally. A live recording, One Night in Malibu, captured a late-2021 performance and surfaced in February 2022. That same period saw the release of “West Coast” as the opening track for what would become their sixth album. In May they topped Billboard’s Top 40 chart with “I Ain’t Worried” from the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack. “Runaway” followed in 2023, joined by “Mirage” featuring Mishaal Tamer for the Assassin's Creed Mirage video game. In 2024 the band teamed with David Guetta for “I Don't Wanna Wait” and supplied “Nobody” to the anime series Kaiju No. 8. Two years after beginning the sixth-album cycle, Tedder and the group unveiled Artificial Paradise in July 2024.
