Since the seventies David T. Walker has ranked among the foremost session guitarists, yet he has never sought the spotlight as a lead soloist or cultivated a flamboyant approach. Instead his rhythm-guitar work and dependable sense of time have supported recordings by an extensive roster of performers, among them Marvin Gaye, Pharaoh Sanders, Aretha Franklin, Barry White, LeVert, Bobbi Humphrey, Johnny Bristol, Leon Ware, Stephanie Mills, and the Crusaders. Efforts released under Walker’s own name have produced uneven results; the 1976 LP On Love, overseen by Crusaders Joe Sample and Wilton Felder, proved particularly unremarkable. Even so, he has sustained his recording activity through subsequent decades and into the twenty-first century, placing several projects with Japanese labels that include 2008’s Thoughts and the 2009 holiday collection Wear My Love.
