Born in 1963 to parents with strong musical leanings, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya emerged early as a child prodigy in Indian classical traditions by embracing the guitar in its evolving role as a vehicle for raga-based expression. All India Radio featured him in performance before he reached the age of five, after which he spent roughly two decades shaping an individual approach through lessons with Brij Bhushan Kabra, recognized as the originator of Indian classical guitar, as well as vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarty and sarod master Ali Akbar Khan. At twenty-one he received the President of India award in 1984. He then concentrated on transforming the Hawaiian slide guitar into an instrument suited to Indian classical demands, introducing chikaris and sympathetic strings before creating a twenty-four-string model derived from the traditional Hawaiian six-string. That design is widely viewed as the most advanced stage in the instrument’s global evolution, securing Bhattacharya’s place among its foremost exponents through his command of Indian forms on the modified instrument. Once established, he participated in international guitar tours and cross-cultural collaborations, notably appearing with John McLaughlin’s Shakti and undertaking multiple projects alongside slide-guitar virtuoso Bob Brozman. Their 2003 joint release, Mahima, merged Hawaiian and Indian idioms and markedly expanded his worldwide recognition. Between 2004 and 2009 he issued at least ten albums, among them the widely praised Love’s Dawn, Til Death Do Us Part, Calcutta Slide Guitar: Vol. 3, Raga Pahadi Jhinjhoti recorded with Swapan Chaudhuri, and Calcutta Chronicles: Indian Slide-Guitar Odyssey, which earned both a Grammy nomination and a BBC Award. From 2010 through 2012 he toured and conducted university workshops. Recording resumed in 2013 with the solo album Madeira: If Music Could Intoxicate and the Riverboat release Beyond the Ragasphere, the latter featuring drummer Jeff Sipe, guitarists Jerry Douglas and John McLaughlin, and keyboardist Raja Narayan Dev. Riverboat followed two years later with Slide Guitar Ragas from Dusk til Dawn, then in 2017 issued the ensemble project Hawaii to Calcutta: A Tribute to Tau Moe.
