Biography
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1947, Winston "Delano" Stewart came of age just as ska began to flourish on the island. During his teenage years he cut multiple ska sides alongside Harris "B.B." Seaton under the duo name Winston & Bibby for the storied producer Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. By the late 1960s the pair had added Maurice Roberts to create the Gaylads, widely regarded as one of Jamaica’s most accomplished three-part harmony groups. Guided by Seaton’s strong songwriting, the trio notched several rocksteady successes at Studio One before moving to Sonia Pottinger’s label, where they laid down the luminous “Joy in the Morning.” Stewart parted ways with the group in 1968 yet continued to track a handful of solo recordings for Pottinger. After settling in the United States in 1969 he stepped away from music entirely, turning to other pursuits and leaving only a compact but striking catalogue behind.
