Rachid, performing as the socially conscious rapper Demi Portion, first drew notice as one half of the hip-hop duo Les Grande Gueules. Like many French MCs, he maintained parallel careers, sustaining his group obligations while developing separate solo work. Raised in the Mediterranean coastal town of Sete, he launched the underground urban project with his childhood companion Karim, known as Sprinter, during 1995. The pair issued their earliest recordings only in 2008 via the two mixtapes On Ne Peut Pas Plaire a Tout le Monde and 8 Titres et Demi, then delivered the studio album Au Paradis d'Enfer the next year. Seeking to present his own material, he secured an individual contract with Y&W. El Gaouli, Muzo, and DJ Saxe supplied the beats for his debut album Artisan du Bic, issued in 2011 and featuring the joint cut “Toujours Ensemble” with his bandmate.
