Biography
Rohan Bennett, born around 1972 in Jamaica, West Indies, launched his professional path by performing on the island’s sound system circuit. Popularity earned in 1995 brought both a nomination and the Rockers award for best new DJ. A run of singles came next, among them the intense ‘Burn Up’, ‘Dem No Know Love’ and the pairing with Brian And Tony Gold titled ‘Bulls Eye Part Two’. International recognition arrived when Determine teamed with leading DJ Beenie Man on the well-received ‘Kette Drum’, produced by Bobby Digital. Originally slated as a solo cut, the track gained Beenie Man’s strong approval for its rhythm, prompting him to invite Determine to complete it as a duet. The resulting record marked the return of Nyahbingi drumming, a style absent from vinyl since the 1970s. That rhythm’s impact triggered a wave of versions, including notable contributions from Shabba Ranks And Cocoa Tea on ‘Flag Flown High’, Bounty Killer’s ‘Seek God’ and Garnett Silk’s ‘Silk Chant’. In 1996, amid the broader revival of Bob Marley rhythms inside dancehall, producer Barry O’Hare and his X-Rated crew enlisted Determine to voice ‘Heathen Chant’. He maintained his visibility through additional hits, such as the combination with Yogie called ‘No One Cares’, the duet with Turbo Belly titled ‘What Dem A Tink’ and solo releases that included ‘Welcome Shaka Zulu’, ‘I Shall Not’, ‘Born Pressurizer’, ‘Nuh Duh Nuttin’, ‘Wuk Out Yu Body’ and ‘If A Nevah Jah’.
