Originating as a solo endeavor from Katatonia guitarist Anders Nyström, also known as Blackheim, the Swedish outfit Diabolical Masquerade issued a succession of atmospheric and misanthropic black metal recordings that opened with the 1995 album Ravendusk in My Heart. A pair of years afterward came the comparably conceived and hostile The Phantom Lodge, succeeded in 1998 by the fan favorite Nightwork; yet Nyström reached what many consider the peak of his ambitious vision with the long-postponed 2001 release Death's Design, conceived as a complete horror-film score. That film ultimately failed to appear, leaving the project without any follow-up recording and prompting widespread reports that Diabolical Masquerade had ceased to exist. It is also noted that Dan Swanö, the renowned producer, musician, and associate of Nyström whose credits include Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath, and Pan-Thy-Monium, has been cited as a possible uncredited participant on several of these releases.
