Emerging from Nigeria during the closing years of the 2010s, vocalist Dice Ailes built momentum through successive releases that fused luminous R&B-infused Afro-pop textures with an understated hip-hop edge. Born Shasha Damilola Alesh and raised in his native country, he first explored singing during childhood; by his teens he had matured into an emerging talent who laid down his initial recording at age 15. One year afterward his family moved to Canada, where he attended York University while maintaining his songwriting activities apart from his studies. A return visit to Nigeria in 2013 introduced him to rapper M.I. Abanga, whose support secured a contract with Chocolate City the next year. Now performing as Dice Ailes, he supplied the label with a consistent flow of singles, among them the breakthrough track “Miracle” in 2016. That same year’s Rookie of the Year nomination at the Headies in Lagos markedly elevated his visibility, after which further singles such as “Ella” and “Otedola” sustained his ascent over the following seasons. His 2019 partnership with Falz on “Alakora” merged sleek pop rhythms with introspective rap passages, a direction echoed early the next year by “Pim Pim,” which featured Olamide.
