Biography
German punk and metal outfit Die Toten Hosen, recognized for their irreverent approach alongside rugged yet melodic songs, rank among the nation's most enduring rock acts, sustaining devoted audiences across Germany plus Australia, South America, and Japan long after their start. The Düsseldorf-based group, whose name means "the Dead Trousers," coalesced in 1982 from the remnants of local punk outfits ZK and KFC. To distinguish among the three members named Andreas, they adopted stage identities: frontman Campino (born Andreas Frege on June 22, 1962), lead guitarist Breiti (born Andreas Breitkopf on February 6, 1964), rhythm guitarist Kuddel (born Andreas Von Holst on June 11, 1964), bassist Andi (born Andreas Meurer on July 24, 1962), and drummer Trini (born Klaus-Dieter Trimpop on June 10, 1951). Their debut, Opel Gang, appeared via self-release in 1983 before EMI took over and reissued it after signing the band. EMI soon parted ways, especially following a lawsuit from German pop figure Heino over an onstage parody, so Virgin stepped in for the 1984 follow-up Unter Falscher Flagge. Trini stepped down from drums in 1985 to manage the group, with Wölli (born Wolfgang Rohde on January 9, 1963) assuming the role. Damenwahl arrived in 1986, charting solidly and marking their first corporate tie-in when condom maker Fromms backed the tour and distributed product samples. A concert recording, Bis Zum Bitteren Ende, surfaced in 1987, and the 1988 studio effort Ein Kleines Bisschen Horrorschau propelled them toward mainstream success by reaching number seven on German charts.
The subsequent release took the form of a double album mixing fresh tracks with earlier singles and obscurities; 1990's 125 Jahre die Toten Hosen: Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück quickly hit number one, proving the prior breakthrough was no anomaly. Their initial English-language project, Learning English: Lesson One, emerged in 1991 as a set of covers drawn from admired British and American punk acts, featuring guest spots from original performers. Johnny Thunders contributed his final recordings to "Born to Lose" on that collection. Atlantic brought it to American audiences in 1994, the same year the band issued another English outing, Love, Peace & Money, initially available only in Japan. Late 1992 saw the politically charged single "Sascha ...Ein Aufrechter Deutscher," which addressed the surge of far-right extremism, sparked debate yet achieved hit status while directing proceeds to anti-racist organizations and foreshadowing the ambitious 1993 concept album Kauf MICH!. After heavy touring through 1993 and 1994, including select U.S. dates supporting Green Day, plus the best-of set Reich & Sexy, the group paused before resurfacing in 1996 with Opium Fürs Volk on their newly launched JKP Records label; the songs explored religious themes.
They marked a milestone by playing their 1,000th show in 1997. A holiday album, Wir Warten Auf's Christkind, came out in fall 1998 under the alias Die Roten Rosen, followed a year later by the more restrained Unsterblich under their primary name. British-born Vom (born Stephen George Ritchie on August 6, 1964) joined as drummer in 1999 after Wölli suffered injuries in a car crash that limited his playing. That same year brought Crash-Landing, an English-language reworking of earlier material aimed once more at broader markets. Returning to German lyrics, Auswärtsspiel topped the national charts in 2002. Zurück zum Glück appeared in fall 2004, In Aller Stille in 2008, and Ballast der Republik in spring 2012, extending their streak of consecutive German number-one albums to five; a bonus disc of covers accompanied a later reissue. Extensive touring in support yielded the 2013 live document Live: Der Krach der Republik. Their sixteenth studio album, Laune der Natur, arrived in 2017.
