Emerging from Dusseldorf, the Broilers came together in 1992 as a German punk band pulling from Oi!, ska, rockabilly, basic hard rock, and high-energy pop. Singer and guitarist Sammy Amara teamed with drummer Andreas "Andi" Brügge at age twelve to start the outfit, taking cues from the Clash, the Sex Pistols, and Die Toten Hosen before settling on the name because it contained "oi." The lineup grew with guitarist Pascal Goßen joining in 1994 and bassist Ines Maybaum arriving in 1995.

The teenage group issued its first release, the three-song EP Schenk Mir Eine Blume, in 1996, then followed with the full-length Fackeln im Sturm … Arme Lichter im Wind the next year. Goßen exited in 1998 and Michael Menke took the guitar spot; as the Broilers built visibility on the European rock circuit through steady touring and releases such as Verlierer Sehen Anders Aus in 2000 and Lo Fi in 2004, Menke departed and Ronald "Ron" Hubner came aboard on guitar.

Signing with People Like You in 2007 brought Vanitas, an album that steered the sound toward straightforward rock, and the band expanded to five members by adding keyboardist Christian "Chris" Kubczak. Commercial breakthrough arrived with 2011’s Santa Muerte, which reached number three on the German album charts and sparked a tour documented on the 2012 live set Santa Muerte Live Tapes. Noir climbed to number one in Germany in 2014. The group then left People Like You to establish its own Skull & Palms Recordings imprint, distributed by Warner Music Group, and opened the new label with 2017’s [Sic!], another chart-topping release.
