Biography
German psych-rock trio Kadavar draw from the brooding, bass-heavy blues traditions of Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, and Led Zeppelin, transforming classic '70s hard-rock elements into fresh stoner-metal territory. The group has maintained a relentless touring schedule of hundreds of shows annually since their self-titled 2010 debut, with each subsequent release outselling the one before. Their 2017 album Rough Times debuted at number 18 on the German charts, while 2019's For the Dead Travel Fast cracked the U.S. metal Top 20 through its embrace of fuzzy, trippy, and eerie textures. In 2020 the band relocated to Berlin's Robotor Records and issued the unusually atmospheric The Isolation Tapes amid pandemic restrictions. Late the following year they joined forces with American expatriates Elder on the conceptual six-track prog-psych set Eldovar: A Story of Darkness & Light.
Christoph Lindemann on guitar and vocals, bassist Simon Bouteloup, and drummer Christoph Bartelt established the group in Berlin. The bearded retro-rock outfit placed their debut with Teepee Records in 2012. A year later they signed with Nuclear Blast, home to kindred spirits Witchcraft and Graveyard, which yielded the follow-up Abra Kadavar in 2013 and the chart-topping Berlin in 2015. Two singles, "Die Baby Die" and "Into the Wormhole," preceded their fourth studio album Rough Times, which arrived in September 2017. After more than 300 concerts across the next eighteen months, the trio entered their refurbished studio in May 2019 to alter their approach. The resulting self-produced record proved their darkest to date, drawing equal influence from vintage horror scores, Werner Herzog's Nosferatu, and early European doom metal. Titled after a phrase by German gothic poet Gottfried August Bürger, For the Dead Travel Fast appeared on Nuclear Blast that autumn.
The global COVID-19 outbreak forced an early end to their touring cycle, prompting Kadavar to join Robotor Records and exchange files while isolated. This process produced The Isolation Tapes, released in April 2021. Still unable to perform live, they pursued a studio collaboration in Berlin with U.S.-born psych-stoner émigrés Elder. The resulting six-song, forty-minute exercise in proggy psych emerged in December under the title Eldovar: A Story of Darkness & Light.
