Biography
Led by guitarist and vocalist Kevin A. Starrs, whose guiding vision shapes the group, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats produce proto-metal explorations that channel the ominous atmosphere of early Black Sabbath, while layering in melodic hooks and a measured psychedelic haze that lends an off-kilter character. Their initial tracks emerged under limited resources, yet the modest sonic clarity did nothing to conceal the ensemble’s core abilities. Even after securing label support, the musicians retained a raw, low-fidelity aesthetic, allowing releases such as the 2013 album Mind Control to register as weathered relics retrieved by happenstance. Growing recognition prompted more confident and expansive efforts; the 2018 outing Wasteland projected a scale suited to large venues relative to prior material. By 2024’s Nell’ Ora Blu they possessed the scope and precision to assemble a largely non-metallic yet persuasive score for a nonexistent Italian film of the 1970s.
Starrs assembled the band in the late 2000s and ushered in its first release, the lo-fi Vol. 1, in 2010. That set compiled tracks Starrs had posted on MySpace, which drew sufficient attention to warrant a physical CD edition; Rise Above later issued a remastered version in 2017. Several songs on Vol. 1 benefited from the contributions of bassist Kat and drummer Red. Proceeds from the album enabled further recording, leading to Blood Lust, tracked in a friend’s garage and initially circulated as a limited CD-R before Rise Above and then Metal Blade gave it broader distribution. During those sessions the original rhythm section departed, prompting Starrs to enlist bassist Dean Millar and drummer Thomas Mowforth. Guitarist Yotam Rubinger also came aboard, and the refreshed lineup prepared another album under Starrs’s production.
An increased budget yielded a more forceful sound on Mind Control, issued by Metal Blade in 2013. The following record drew inspiration from pulp crime novels and sought to evoke a gritty, shadowy mood while recounting a serial killer’s story. To realize that atmosphere the musicians chose Toe Rag Studios and engineer Liam Watson. Starrs again produced and assumed bass duties after Millar’s exit; Mowforth likewise departed, with Rubinger’s brother Itamar taking over on drums. The resulting 2015 album The Night Creeper revived a stripped-down metal approach, expanding the audience to include dedicated psychedelic-rock listeners drawn by both the recorded sound and the band’s intense concerts.
Following that release the lineup shifted once more when Vaughn Stokes joined on second guitar. With the Rubinger brothers gone and Jon Rice installed on drums, the remaining trio traveled to Sunset Studio in Los Angeles to track their fifth album. Engineer Geoff Neal assisted, and the group utilized the same echo chamber employed by Van Halen in the 1970s for basic tracking; Starrs then completed the material at his home studio in Cambridge. Like numerous late-2010s releases, the politically charged and dystopian Wasteland of 2018 reflected Starrs’s massive guitar textures and the band’s tinny, Sabbath-derived punch. Touring continued until early 2020, resuming in 2022. Selections from two Minneapolis performances—one from 2019 and one from 2022—appeared in 2023 as Slaughter on First Avenue.
During this period Starrs conceived an instrumental project before abandoning it for an endeavor entirely removed from the band’s prior work. Motivated by his admiration for 1970s Italian cinema, he drafted a screenplay and composed fitting music. Recording mostly alone and employing Italian actors for spoken passages, he produced Nell’ Ora Blu, a pronounced departure that retained occasional metallic weight while introducing introspective instrumental sections, piano passages, murky prog-rock detours, somber synthesizer vignettes, and spiraling psychedelic pieces, all overlaid with actors delivering the scripted dialogue. Issued in May 2024, the album left Starrs contemplating the prospect of presenting it onstage.
