Spirit Adrift emerged from Arizona as a melodic, riff-driven doom metal outfit founded by Nate Garrett, who handles guitar and vocals while also performing with Tempe death metallers Gatecreeper. Garrett handled every instrument on the project's 2016 debut, Chained to Oblivion, before assembling a complete lineup that delivered 2017's Curse of Conception. Subsequent releases, including the 2020 album Enlightened in Eternity and the covers-focused 20 Centuries Gone from 2022, arrived amid further personnel changes.

Garrett grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he absorbed the Ozark Mountain community's thriving metal environment during his early years. After sharpening his abilities in local groups and struggling with heavy drinking, he moved to Arizona, achieved sobriety, entered Gatecreeper, and launched Spirit Adrift. Blending Southern rock, classic doom metal, and traditional heavy metal influences, the 2016 debut Chained to Oblivion summoned echoes of Black Sabbath, Baroness, Judas Priest, and Thin Lizzy. A split 7" alongside Denver doom rockers Khemmis came before the full-band sophomore album Curse of Conception, which expanded beyond the solo format of the first record. The 2019 release Divided by Darkness embraced a versatile, high-impact fusion of thrash, doom, NWOBHM, and melodic metal, a direction continued on the expansive and epic Enlightened in Eternity in 2020. The EP Forge Your Future surfaced in 2021, while 20 Centuries Gone in 2022 featured reinterpretations of tracks by Pantera, Type O Negative, Metallica, and additional artists.
