Mount Salem, a quartet assembled in Chicago during 2012, nonetheless conjure the aura of an unearthed relic from heavy metal’s earliest era by channeling the doom-drenched approach of foundational acts including Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Pentagram. Emily Kopplin supplies vocals and organ, Kyle Morrison handles guitar, Mark Hewett plays bass, and Cody Davidson covers drums, allowing the ensemble to project an expansive psychedelic texture rooted in the early 1970s while vintage equipment supplies an unmistakable sense of period accuracy. The group’s initial recording surfaced in 2013 as the self-issued EP Endless, whose arrival prompted Metal Blade Records to offer a contract before the calendar year ended. The label then reissued Endless in 2014, converting the original release into a full-length edition that incorporated two additional tracks.
