Biography
Witch Mountain originated in Portland, Oregon, where the group began channeling apocalyptic, shuddering doom metal upon forming in 1997. Early lineups featured guitarist-vocalist Rob Wrong alongside bassist Dave Hoopaugh and drummer Nate Carson; those members built recognition through shared bills with YOB, Eyehategod, and Electric Wizard before issuing the band’s first recording, Come the Mountain, in 2001. Activity diminished the following year as the musicians turned toward family obligations and separate endeavors, yet momentum returned in 2009 once Uta Plotkin came aboard as permanent vocalist. The resulting quartet infused the music with heightened ominous drama, yielding the long-awaited follow-up South of Salem in 2011. Later the same year the band aligned with Profound Lore, which issued Cauldron of the Wild in 2012. A European tour backing Nik Turner’s Hawkwind set the stage for Mobile of Angels, produced by Billy Anderson and released in 2014.
