Hailing from Hamburg, Germany, the indie rock band Kettcar came into existence in 2001, featuring Marcus Wiebusch and Reimar Bustorff, who had previously played in Rantanplan. Seeking to move beyond the energetic punk and ska styles prevalent in their past work, these two musicians collaborated with Erik Langer, Frank Tirado-Rosales, and Lars Wiebusch, Marcus's sibling, to lay down enough tracks for a full album. Without securing a record deal, however, Kettcar partnered with Tomte, another Hamburg-based act, to establish the label Grand Hotel van Cleef. On this imprint, they issued their first album, Du und Wieviel von Deinen Freunden, during 2002. Following a three-year hiatus in which the group focused on label operations, Kettcar put out their second record, Von Spatzen und Tauben, Dächern und Händen, in 2005.
