Muff Potter ranks among Germany’s stronger alternative rock outfits. The group took shape in the early 1990s as a standard German punk act before rapidly broadening its approach and landing a Universal contract in the mid-2000s. Founded in 1993 in Rheine, North Rhine-Westphalia, the band held its first rehearsal on May 9 of that year. Singer and guitarist Thorsten Negelschmidt, also known as Nagel and born June 5, 1976, in Rheine, remains the sole constant member from the original roster. The current lineup also features singer and guitarist Dennis Scheider, who entered in 1995 and was born December 22, 1977, in Emsbüren, Lower Saxony; bassist Dominic Laurenz, nicknamed Shredder, who arrived in 2000 and was born January 12, 1981, in Steinfurt, North Rhine-Westphalia; and drummer Thorsten Brameier, nicknamed Brami, who joined in 1994 and was born February 7, 1975, in Mesum, North Rhine-Westphalia. The name derives from a figure in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, where Muff Potter stands falsely accused of murder before being exonerated.

In its initial phase the quartet operated squarely within punk parameters, delivering politically charged lyrics over characteristically rapid tempos. Its first recording, the March 1994 demo cassette Bambule -- Kleine Geschichten aus dem Grossen Knast, was tracked at Flat-Fish Studio in Rheine. A self-titled full-length album followed in 1996, likewise cut at Flat-Fish yet issued solely on vinyl. Schrei, Wenn Du Brennst appeared in 1997 as the second album and the first on CD; it marked the recorded debut of both Scheider and Brameier. Bordsteinkantengeschichten arrived in 2000, accompanied that same year by the vinyl-only 7-inch Potthoff EP. Heute Wird Gewonnen, Bitte surfaced in 2003 and signaled a decisive stylistic shift away from punk roots toward a broader, more dynamic palette, illustrated by the single and video “Placebo Domingo.” This evolution drew the attention of major-label executives.

Consequently, Von Wegen was released by Universal in 2005 and became the band’s first entry on the German charts, reaching the Top 100. Its single “Alles Was Ich Brauch” also charted, peaking at number 88. The album later received a Japanese edition retitled My Huckleberry Friend in 2006. Steady Fremdkörper followed in 2007, climbing into the Top 40 and yielding the hit single “Fotoautomat.”
