Slime

Formed in 1979 under the initial name Screamer, German punk group Slime coalesced around a founding four-piece that featured Elf (Michael Mayer) handling vocals and guitar, bassist Eddi Räther, drummer Ball (Peter Wodok), and lead vocalist Dirk Jora. Christian Mevs entered as second guitarist the following year, after which Stephan Mahler assumed drumming duties in place of Ball in 1981. Observers routinely single out Slime as the archetypal deutschpunk unit, fusing the period’s politically militant anarchist outlook with the blunt ferocity of mid-’70s British punk. The group issued multiple albums from 1979 through 1994 before fragmenting into Rubberslime, Elf remaining the sole original participant.
