Formed on Long Island in 1994, Diffuser’s four members sought a fresh band name that avoided standard hooks and instead signaled their sharp, distinctive edge. Originally called Flu Thirteen, the lineup of Tomas Costanza on guitar and vocals, Lawrence Sullivan on bass, Billy Alemaghides on drums, and Anthony Cangelosi on guitar had already logged extensive road time and now hoped to steer their touring momentum past the independent textures of the 1998 Steve Albini-produced debut In the Foul Key of V. The new millennium delivered a fresh contract with Hollywood Records and renewed scope for self-definition. In summer 2000 the single “Karma” landed on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack, and the following year the band issued the full-length Injury Loves Melody. Summer 2003 brought Making the Grade; after several personnel shifts the group then consisted of Costanza, Cangelosi, drummer Danny Leo, and bassist Peter Schojan. Leo subsequently left to join Action Action.
