Biography
Dirty on Purpose emerged from New York City as a shoegazer-inspired indie outfit whose atmospheric, guitar-driven sound and alternating male-female vocals aligned them with the lineage of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, and My Bloody Valentine, along with cult acts such as Antietam, Come, and Sleepyhead. The group coalesced in Brooklyn during 2002, its original lineup comprising keyboardist Erika Forster, guitarist Joseph Jurewicz, and drummer Doug Marvin—who together handled the lead vocals—alongside non-singing guitarist George Wilson and bassist D.J. Boudreau. After issuing a self-released, self-titled four-track EP in 2003, the band attracted wider notice with the 2004 full-length Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow. Soon after that debut, Forster departed to form the electronically oriented Au Revoir Simone, whose first album, Verses of Comfort, Assurance & Salvation, appeared in early 2006. With Wilson stepping in to complete the third lead-vocal slot and occasional guest female singers providing support, the reduced ensemble delivered its sophomore effort, Hallelujah Sirens, in May 2006. Two further EPs surfaced in 2008, yet by year’s end the members had chosen to disband, closing their run with a New Year’s Eve performance in Manhattan.
