Biography
Since the late 2000s, Atlanta-based DJ and mixtape figure DJ Holiday has helped elevate numerous leading hip-hop acts, including Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, Wiz Khalifa, and additional rising talents. Beyond curating widely popular mixtapes for others, he issued his own projects that routinely spotlighted prominent collaborators. The 2015 release God Bless gathered appearances from Young Thug, Kevin Gates, Migos, and further contributors, while Holiday advanced his output with the 2023 single "No Stress," which featured Wiz Khalifa and O.T. Genasis.
Born Robert Avery in Germany during 1983, DJ Holiday grew up in Decatur, Georgia, where an early fascination with music and hip-hop culture took hold. He began DJ'ing while still in high school, and by 2006 he had established Plush Blue Entertainment, the Atlanta-area party promotion firm focused on music events. Around that period he linked with rap tastemaker DJ Drama and entered Drama's Aphiliates collective. This connection enabled Holiday to launch his own mixtape series, starting with Holiday Season in 2008. The following year he contributed to multiple influential projects, among them Gorilla Zoe's Feeding Time, Gucci Mane's Writing on the Wall, the joint effort Alaska in Atlanta alongside OJ da Juiceman, and notably Nicki Minaj's third mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty, which presented Minaj's abilities at peak intensity and intensified industry and fan attention. These efforts also earned Holiday recognition from hip-hop outlets and national radio, culminating in an MTV DJ of the Year honor in 2010.
As the decade progressed, Holiday sustained the Holiday Season installments and maintained a flow of mixtape partnerships with French Montana, Gucci Mane, DJ Ill Will, Young Dolph, and others. The 2015 mixtape God Bless the Mixtape stood out for its roster of more than a dozen leading rappers, among them DJ Clue, Meek Mill, and Migos. Expanding beyond mixtapes, he hosted an Atlanta radio program to track emerging directions in hip-hop. In 2017 he issued the Pakman Jitt-assisted single "Deeper Than Pro Tools" and the Dave East collaborative mixtape Karma. Remaining active, Holiday dropped the 2018 single "2 Seater" with 21 Savage and Quavo. The next year he joined Muhleak for the collaborative mixtape The M Tape, which included guest spots from Kilo, NVMBR, and additional artists. Holiday's subsequent single "No Stress" appeared in 2023, built on a dark, menacing beat and carrying vocals from Wiz Khalifa and O.T. Genasis.
