Drawing inspiration from Manchester's early-1990s rave scene, Sydney, Australia indie trio DMA's layers intricate guitar textures with sweeping, nostalgic melodies that evoke the high points of Oasis and Primal Scream. From their earliest efforts the three songwriters produced successful tracks, beginning with the dreamy acoustic single "Delete" on their self-titled EP and continuing through chart entries such as the 2018 album For Now and the 2020 release The Glow, both of which also reached audiences in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Their fourth studio album, How Many Dreams?, appeared in 2023 once the band had reviewed more than seventy demos to select the final twelve songs.

DMA's came together in 2012 when Johnny Took and Tommy O'Dell, both formerly of the local rock band Underlights, began collaborating with guitarist Matt Mason. Home-recorded demos quickly secured them a deal with the independent label I Oh You, after which their debut single "Delete" rose on the charts and earned acclaim from critics, fellow musicians, and an expanding audience. The self-titled debut EP followed in summer 2014, and their first full-length album, Hills End, arrived in early 2016. The singles "Dawning," "In the Air," and "For Now" preceded the April 2018 release of their second studio album, also titled For Now.

In 2019 DMA's issued their first live album, MTV Unplugged Live, recorded during a 2018 performance at Melbourne's Memo Music Hall. Their third studio album, The Glow, arrived in 2020, introduced by the singles "Silver" and "Life Is a Game of Changing." One month before the late-April street date the band released an Orbital remix of "Life Is a Game of Changing." While retaining the anthemic choruses and expansive arrangements of prior work, The Glow moved further into 1990s rave production techniques.

In the period immediately after The Glow, DMA's confronted the same COVID-19 restrictions that halted live music worldwide. Live at Brixton, documenting one of their final pre-lockdown concerts, was released in March 2021. That August they issued the four-track, self-produced EP I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going to Miss You, which marked a return to simpler recording methods. After years of development, the band's fourth studio album, How Many Dreams?, reached stores in March 2023; its songs originated both during pandemic lockdowns and in material dating back to the group's formation.
